Prince Edward County, Virginia, closed its entire public school system for five years (1959-1964) rather than integrate, part of the state's "Massive Resistance" campaign.
White students received state tuition grants for private "segregation academies" while Black students went largely without formal schooling during the closure.
The 1964 Griffin v. County School Board of Prince Edward County Supreme Court ruling forced the schools to reopen and desegregate.
