1971 Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education upheld busing as a constitutional tool to desegregate schools, becoming the national model for court-ordered integration.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg's busing program was considered one of the most successful in the country until it ended in 2002.
Post-2002, Charlotte schools have significantly resegregated by neighborhood, a pattern studied nationally as a resegregation case.
